What if my name does not appear on the voter's list?
If your name is not on the
voters' list or inactive voters’ list, or is listed incorrectly, you can still
vote. You can go to your local election office to further investigate your
eligibility. The election official will research voter registration records. If
proof of your having registered is found, the official will issue you a
certificate. You can vote at the election office by absentee ballot or take the
certificate back to your polling place to vote.
You may appear before the municipal election official at town/city hall to
dispute your eligibility. The election official will make a search of voter
registration records. If you are found during that search, the election official
may issue you a certificate to go back to the polling place and vote, or you may
vote at the town/city hall.
OR you can vote by PROVISIONAL BALLOT.
Provisional voting means that every voter coming to the polls on Election Day
will be able to cast a ballot. A provisional ballot will be given to any person
who declares that he or she is eligible to vote but whose name does not appear
on the official voters’ list; to anyone whose name or other information is
listed incorrectly on the voters’ list; or under certain circumstances to voters
who are voting for the first time. If the voter is alter determined to be
eligible, that vote will be counted.
How do I vote by provisional ballot?
You will be asked to show suitable identification with your name and current
address. If you do not have suitable identification, your ballot may not be
counted. Suitable identification, which must show your name and address,
includes a copy of a current and valid photo identification, current utility
bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document.
After voting, place your provisional ballot in the envelope provided, seal it
and return it to the election official.
How will I know if my provisional ballot was counted?
You will receive an information sheet with instructions about how to find out if
your provisional ballot was counted by calling your local election office or the
office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, 800-462-VOTE. This information will
be available seven days after a primary election and 20 days after a general
election.
