WORCESTER YOUTH CENTER
Mission/Purpose: The Worcester Youth Center provides a place where young people can build lasting, positive change in their lives. It accomplishes this mission by seeking resources, collaborations and opportunities that help young people to realize their full potential, sharpen skills and enable them to become vital, responsible and contributing members of society. It supports activities for social justice and contributes efforts to create change in the community, which will benefit everyone. Programs/Activities: The Urban Community Action Program for Teens is an experiential program that addresses community issues by combining elements of traditional leadership development programs and hands-on service learning projects. It includes leadership development components such as communication, planning and writing and service learning so that participants learn about civic responsibility and the importance of community participation. UCAPT is different from programs in which the staff, usually adults, pre-plan service learning opportunities because in UCAPT, the young people play the central role in identifying community needs and designing and implementing the community service projects. Participants: Youth ages 14-19. Getting Involved: Those interested in participating must have an interview with a member of the Youth Center staff. For more information contact the Youth Center by phone or in person.
