SOCIAL CAPITAL OF WOBURN

Mission/Purpose: Social Capital of Woburn’s (SCI) mission is to build social capital and increase civic engagement.

Programs/Activities: SCI places a priority on engaging youth in order to promote long-term increases in civic engagement.

Youth Council engages a diverse group of 12 to 17 year olds in making a difference in the community, through distributing mini-grants to other youth projects and implementing other civic initiatives. As community leaders, they also encourage their peers to become active young citizens.

Civil Rights Forum: SCI helps to make Martin Luther King Day a unifying community-wide celebration. In addition, SCI has developed a “Civil Rights Forum” that has enabled Woburn Memorial High School students to learn about the civil rights movement from individuals with significant knowledge of the subject.

In addition to these ongoing programs, SCI offers a number of opportunities for young people to get involved in short-term community service and civic engagement projects.

Participants: Youth ages 12-17 who live in Woburn.

Getting Involved: Contact SCI Woburn to learn about current projects or how to get involved in specific programs.
