SOCIAL CAPITAL OF DORCHESTER
Mission/Purpose: Social Capital of Dorchester (SCI) is an initiative to build social capital and civic engagement in Dorchester, focusing on the Fields Corner and Codman Square neighborhoods. Programs/Activities: SCI believes that a focus on youth is essential to reversing the long-term decline in civic engagement. In particular, there is a need to encourage youth to participate in the political process. ■ Youth Council trains youth to mobilize their peers to become civically engaged. Youth Council projects include running a mini-grants program to support youth-initiated projects to participating in various service learning projects and community events. ■ Summer Serve allows youths involved in this program to reach out to Dorchester youth, connecting them with opportunities and activities. Additionally, participants work with the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute on a youth-focused project in support of their Peace Campaign and research Dorchester neighborhoods to educate youth about Dorchester. In addition to these ongoing programs, SCI offers a number of opportunities for young people to get involved in short-term community service and civic engagement projects. Participants: Youth ages 12-17 who live in Dorchester.
