PROJECT HIP-HOP (ACLU)

Mission/Purposes: Through the study of hip hop culture and the history of social movements, Project HIP-HOP engages young people in a process of critically analyzing the past and present so they can take action to make a better future.

Programs/Activities:

  • Lower Roxbury Violence Prevention/ Leadership Development Initiative: Building the leadership of teens who develop and lead cross-turf activities that bring neighborhood youth together.

  • Hip Hop Renaissance Initiative: This Initiative exposes young people to the elements of hip hop, teaches them to understand and critique the evolution of hip hop culture, and shows young people how to develop their skills and use technology to reclaim as a tool to organize and unite people.Project ACTION:  (Achieving Community through Involvement & Organizing Now!): As youth raise issues that affect them, Project HIP-HOP helps them organize around their issues. Campaigns arise throughout the year

  • Summer Leadership Institute: Each summer PHH employs 15 youth in a 7-week Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). The SLI includes a trip to the South to study the Civil Rights Movement or the North to study the history of hip hop culture and street activism. While in Boston, youth receive training and do projects focused on community organizing, leadership development, and hip-hop culture. The Institute is the training ground for youth who will become leaders in our school-year work

Participants: Predominantly young people of color from traditionally low-income communities in Boston.
