GIRLS INC.

Mission/Purpose: The mission of Girls Inc. is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold by meeting the needs of girls in the community, developing girls’ capacity to overcome the effects of discrimination and be self-sufficient, responsible members of the community, and by serving as a vigorous advocate for all girls.

Programs/Activities:

Career Path is a year-round program which offers approximately 25 teens the opportunity to focus on academics while receiving job-readiness and life skills training. Teens are then able to gain hands-on experience through interactive workshops (for example, computer and communication skills), community service, and a six week paid summer internship.

La Verdad is a group of teens who are committed to preventing substance abuse and helping youth make healthy decisions. Teens design and facilitate workshops to educate youth in the Lynn area on topics such as communication skills, stress management, peer and media pressure, refusal skills, tobacco and alcohol awareness, addiction education, and leadership skills.

Teen Health Ambassadors are teens who promote healthy choices as they educate other teens on preventing HIV/AIDS, STDs, teen pregnancy, and abusive relationships. They also deliver workshops on topics related to health such as self esteem, values, and decision making.

Strong, Smart, and Bold encourages participants to be “strong, smart, and bold” by enhancing literacy, computer technology, and leadership skills.

Participants: High school girls in Lynn and the surrounding area.

Getting Involved: Interested teens should look on the Girls Inc. website, http://www.girlsinclynn.org for additional information about programs and group activities.
