CITY YEAR BOSTON

Mission/Purpose: City Year is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to helping to build a strong democracy through three essential – and interconnected – civic strategies: citizen service, civic leadership and social entrepreneurship, which serve as the civic foundation for a strong, active and responsive democracy.

Programs/Activities: City Year’s National Youth Corps unites young people from diverse economic, racial and geographical backgrounds for 10 months of full-time service to their communities. During the program, City Year corps members engage in a variety of activities to meet critical needs in their communities. They are primarily focused on the education and development of youth, serving as mentors for children in partnership with public schools and organizing and running after-school programs and curricula on important social issues including domestic violence prevention, AIDS awareness and diversity.

Participants: U.S. citizens and legal permanent resident aliens who have graduated high school and are ages 17-24.

Getting Involved: Participants must meet age, education and residency requirements. There are 17 City Year sites across the United States. Applicants may apply to a specific site or to the National Recruitment Department to serve where volunteers are most needed. There are four admission deadlines per year. Application materials and full program details are available at http://www.cityyear.org/joincorps/index.cfm .
