CENTER FOR TEEN EMPOWERMENT

Mission/Purpose: The Center for Teen Empowerment empowers youth and adults as agents of positive individual, institutional and social change.

Programs/Activities: At Teen Empowerment’s youth organizing sites, youth and adult staff bring youth voices into the dialogue about improving their schools and communities, mobilize the energy of urban youth to create meaningful change, and facilitate mutually respectful relationships between youth and adults. Youth Organizers are hired in the fall and work through the school year to make a positive impact on their school and community and address important issues that might not otherwise be addressed. Each Teen Empowerment site employs 10-12 youth organizers. The youth organizer group for each site is chosen to reflect a cross section of the youth in that school or community and to provide opportunity for young people with leadership potential and a commitment to creating positive social change. Once selected, youth organizers meet four afternoons per week. During the first two weeks of the project, they complete a detailed curriculum designed to address issues they identify in the community. Following this training period, the group works throughout the year to implement their action strategy.

Getting Involved: Teen Empowerment operates sites in Boston and Somerville. Young people interested in becoming Youth Organizers and who either attend a school or live in a community with a TE site should contact the site early in September.
