BOSTON CENTER FOR COMMUNITY AND JUSTICE

Mission/Purpose: The Boston Center for Community and Justice is dedicated to advancing social justice in Greater Boston. It encourages people of all ages to participate in their communities and promotes inclusion and equality.

Programs/Activities:

BCCJ Leadership Initiative (formerly known as AnyTown) develops inclusive leaders who value diversity and are committed to making a positive change in their community. Held for a week during the summer, BCCJ Leadership Initiative is a competitive, unique program. Through workshops, skill-building exercises and informal interaction with peers from a wide range of backgrounds, the participants develop an understanding of their own perceptions and stereotypes and gain respect for individuals whose backgrounds may differ from their own.

LeadYoungBoston is a leadership development program for high school students who participated in the BCCJ Leadership Initiative or have a similar background in social justice awareness. It is a 10-month intensive training program focused upon issues of social justice. The program is modeled after BCCJ’s LeadBoston program for adult professionals and executives and allows youth to select two areas of social policy for in-depth analysis and action.

Participants: Students in grades 10-12.

Getting Involved: All potential delegates for the BCCJ Leadership Initiative must be nominated by a teacher, advisor or community leader. Applications are judged based on the quality of the nomination as well as the applicant’s essay and leadership capabilities and potential. Applicants for the LeadYoungBoston program should demonstrate commitment to social justice advocacy by attending the BCCJ Leadership Initiative program or exhibiting excellent leadership potential as a member of a diversity club at their school for at least one year. Applications and additional information are on the BCCJ website.

Fees: A $350 fee includes the BCCJ Leadership Initiative, transportation from Boston, all meals and overnight accommodations. Scholarships are available.
