AMERICAN LEGION BOYS STATE
Mission/Purpose: Boys State provides youth with training in practical citizenship and the operation of government.
Programs/Activities: Approximately 400 Massachusetts youth participate in Boys State for one week each June. They are housed on a Massachusetts college campus for a week and segmented in groups of “cities” and “towns.” Over the course of the week, each city or town is provided with a basic working knowledge of municipal governance. From there, these groups of students build themselves into a working government structure establishing budgets and enacting local legislation. In addition to their city and town assignments, each student is a member of a political party, assigned randomly and without platform. Party members caucus, build and elect a slate of statewide candidates, all to the final goal of establishing a Massachusetts Boys State Government.
Participants: Male students who have completed 11th grade.
Getting Involved: The selection process differs in the various Departments of the American Legion. High schools typically recommend a list of eligible candidates to a local American Legion Post. The Post then conducts interviews and selects their representative(s) to the program.
Fees: Tuition fees are paid by the American Legion Posts or other community-minded organizations, with little or no expense to the participant.
