AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY GIRLS STATE
Mission/Purpose: Girls State educates youth about the basic ideals and principles of government to help ensure the survival of democracy.
Programs/Activities: At Girls State, the “citizens”study local, county and state government processes for one week in June. They set up their own miniature city, county and state governments and administer them according to the law of their particular state. After arriving at Girls State, the citizens are divided into two political parties, which do not reflect the two major political parties. The parties allow citizens to gain knowledge about the operation of a two-party system. Activities include legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, debating and voting. The citizens also receive instruction in parliamentary procedure.
Participants: Female students who have completed11th grade.
Getting Involved: Applicants should demonstrate an interest in government and current events and a desire to learn. Only girls who display high moral character, strong leadership abilities and an above-average scholastic standing will be considered.
Fees: Tuition fees are paid by American Legion Auxiliary Posts or other community-minded organizations, American Legion Auxiliary of Massachusetts, with little or no expense to the participant.
