ABOUT THIS DIRECTORY
The League of Women Voters of Massachusetts Citizen Education Fund is a nonpartisan educational trust whose mission is to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government. The League believes that the future of our democracy depends on the next generation of voters and leaders. To ensure that the next generation is prepared, young people need opportunities to learn about government and the electoral and political processes.
The League has compiled this directory as a resource for young people interested in civic engagement, citizen participation in politics and government, and leadership development. Though each program is different, each in some way provides young people with the tools and motivation to participate in the democratic process later in their lives.
This directory is by no means an exhaustive list of every program available in Massachusetts or in the United States. In addition to the organizations and programs listed, young people are encouraged to consult their local school district, city or town government and community center to find out about other programs that they may offer.
Many of the programs listed in this directory could be used as models for other communities or for youth groups that are looking for ways to involve young people in civic education and to encourage citizen participation in government. The League of Women Voters applauds the people who work with youth to engage them in civic participation and leadership development and hopes that this directory is a useful tool for parents, students, mentors, teachers, and youth group leaders.
