Education Agenda

 

Accomplishments

  • Strengthening Voting Rights and Voter Confidence bill -- achieved passage in September 2006; signed into law as Ch. 299

    • bill was co-sponsored by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, William Galvin, and the Chairs of the Election Laws Committee.

  • Absentee voting -- achieved first-round passage of a constitutional amendment via the Chairs of the Election Laws Committee to remove needless restrictions on absentee voting (S.2034)

    • lobbied heavily for this bill, including meeting with the Senate President and personally visiting the offices of most legislators

  • Joined a study group sponsored by the Election Laws Committee to develop implementation plans for Election Day registration and early voting

The League has supported this legislative work with extensive research, lobbying, public relations and public education activities, including:

  • Op ed on S.2277 -- printed in 10 newspapers

  • Absentee voting  letter to the editor -- printed in four newspapers

  • Letter to the editor on S.2277 -- printed in six newspapers around the state

  • Thirteen speaking engagements and local league EVP presentations around the state

  • A press conference at the State House to mark the filing of S.2277 -- Chairs of the Election Laws Committee  and representatives of the Secretary of State

  • Testimony at four Election Laws Committee Hearings on S.2277, Election Day Registration, Election Workers, and Absentee Voting

  • In-person lobbying of all legislators’ offices on behalf of S.2034, and email and telephone lobbying of all Senators on behalf of S.2277

  • Original research on the legal and practical implications of unconditional absentee voting, early voting, and additional requirements for ID at the polls
