Massachusetts League Leaders Update July 2008
Administration
Annual Meeting Reporting
Following local League annual meetings please send your Local League Board List
and Program Report and your approved budget for FY 08/09 to the state League
office. The development of the LWVMA Directory will come from this reporting as
well as the email list for the League Leader Update, so be sure to include
current contact information for all board members and positions.
The slate of officers from 07-08 will be deleted from the database and
the new information will be input so we need the entire slate from every League,
not just the changes or newly elected board members.
Please be sure to send in any outstanding assessments so that
we can close out the fiscal year.

Phonothon 2008
It's time to organize your Phonothon
locations and callers. This is an easy way to raise funds for your local
League and the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts. Contact your local
phone bank locations and let Jo-Ann Berry
know a couple of dates that will work. We will fill in the calendar on a
first come first serve basis.

and Training

If your League missed Council, you can obtain hard copy materials including FREE
brochures and handbooks that were distributed by contacting the League office
at: 617 523-2999.
LWVMA and LWVUS ask local Leagues
to send copies of your bulletins
and board minutes to us so we’ll stay informed about all your activities.
Reading these helps keep us aware of the issues that local Leagues find most
important and gives us leads for local League activities to be highlighted in
the Massachusetts Voter.
We ask that ONE copy of each
bulletin and one set of board minutes be sent to LWVMA. Sending them via email
at lwvma@lwvma.org
is fine if it’s more convenient for you.
Every bulletin and set of minutes is reviewed and routed to the relevant LWVMA
board members and specialists.
Please mail or email copies of your bulletins and minutes as follows:

Program and Action
On our agenda: Election Day
Registration, Safer Alternatives to Toxic Chemicals, Equitable Coverage for
Annuity Policies and Safe Patient Limits
are bills that have not been referred to study, and are still in committee.
Local Leagues are being contacted directly to lobby committee members and once
the bills reach the Senate or the House for a vote, action alerts will be sent
to the entire membership. Please encourage your League to take action!
LWVMA joins the Coalition for Our
Communities in opposition to Question #1 Ballot Initiative to repeal the state
income tax.
LWVMA Fiscal Policy
Specialist, June Michaels, is working with the
Coalition on a VOTE NO on QUESTION 1 campaign.
The income tax question on the ballot this fall is a reckless proposal
that will have severe and immediate consequences for everyone in the state. The
binding referendum will take $12.7 billion –nearly 40 percent- out of the state
budget, driving up local property taxes and leading to drastic cuts in services.
