Education Agenda

 

Did you know?

  • Massachusetts ranks #17 in voter turnout while Maine is #2 and New Hampshire is #4

  • 9% of Massachusetts voters were denied a ballot in 2004 due to registration problems

  • Only 23% of provisional ballots were counted in Massachusetts in 2004

  • 24 states allow anyone to vote absentee for any reason, while in Massachusetts absentee voting is strictly limited

  • 58% of those registered nationwide wished to vote in 2000 but could not because the process was too difficult and inconvenient


The Empowering Voters Project was initiated to:

  • Make voting fairer and easier for the citizens of Massachusetts

  • Ensure citizens go to the polls knowing their rights and responsibilities


Project highlights and goals include:

  • Removing needless restrictions on absentee voting

  • Allowing Election Day Registration

  • Encouraging youth civic engagement with the creation of the “Directory of Civic Engagement & Leadership Programs for Massachusetts Youth”

  • Allowing early voting

  • Educating voters, in multiple languages, on their rights and responsibilities

  • Ensuring the continuing impartiality of elections officials
